Smith County Important Deadlines

  • January 1
The value of your property on this date determines your taxable value and homestead status for the year. If you’re turning 65 or qualify for a disability exemption, you can apply as soon as you’re eligible.
  • January 31
Last day to pay the Smith County Property tax for previous year without penalty or interest. If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, it’s extended to the next business day.
  • April 1
Deadline to file business personal property renditions or request an extension.
  •  April 30
Final day to apply for many exemptions, including homestead, over-65, disability, and agricultural or wildlife productivity appraisal.
  •  May 15
Deadline to file a property tax protest with Smith County CAD’s Appraisal Review Board (ARB), or 30 days from the date your property tax appraisal notice is mailed—whichever is later.
  • October
Tax bills are typically mailed this month. Be sure to review them carefully and prepare for payment before the year-end deadline.
